[Week 10] Creative assignment: 2D Fabrication (cup coasters)

Collaborative work for 2D Fabrication

Cup Coasters

Practice (first trial): Puzzle-Shape Keychains

Final outcome: Cup Coasters

Reflection:

I worked with Yihan and Aileen on a 2D Fabrication project. For practice, we made puzzle-shaped acrylic pieces to test how the image and shape would come out after laser cutting. It helped us check the engraving, composition, and overall fit before starting the final work. For our final work, we made three coasters using different acrylic colors. The hardest part was making the two pieces interlock properly. We had to keep adjusting the curves and edges, and it took some trial and error to get the shape right. Since we had already gone through the process once with the practice piece, we were able to move through each step more quickly the second time. Working with acrylic through laser cutting was really interesting, and it made me think this material and technique could work beautifully for a sun catcher because of its high reflectivity.

  2. Hi Jiwon, This is such a strong process, and it’s really satisfying to see how the practice piece directly improved the final coasters! The interlocking shapes look super clean, and you can tell how much attention went into getting the fit right. The idea of turning this into a sun catcher sounds amazing, especially with how acrylic plays with light, I’d love to see you take it in that direction.

  3. Hi Jiwon! This project is so cool! I am not only impressed with how quickly you were able to do this, but also with the thoughtfulness that you approached this with. I feel as though all of your projects are so thoroughly planned and executed, they have a professional-level quality to them. I really enjoy the way that you were able to make practical items, both with the keychains and the coasters themselves. You guys made a really great call on the patterns and overall shapes of the coasters as well, they feel like something straight out of the MoMA Design store! I agree with your idea of creating a sun catcher, as the material really lends itself to playing with light.
