[Week 3] Creative Assignment: Sound

I wanted this soundtrack to feel genuinely comfortable to listen to, so I made sure no sound suddenly jumps out and interrupts the flow. I also separated the high and low frequencies and layered them together, because the mix felt more balanced when both ranges were present at the same time.

For the typing sound, I added a "box talking" effect to give it a catchy vibe. It turns the rhythm into something a little catchier, almost like a chirping texture, so it feels less like plain documentation and more like a sound element. I also transposed the typing sound up by +6 to make it brighter, making sure it didn’t sound piercing.

To keep the mood calm, I used water sounds in a few different ways (a shower tap and splashing inside a tube) and blended them with a slow piano loop. The repetitive piano sound is steady, and that steadiness adds comfort in a different way. The track starts with rice cooking and water, moves into typing, whistling, and subway sounds, and ends with a train announcement and the sound of scratching a winter coat with my fingernails.

In my art class, I'd love students to record "readymade" sounds (songs they love, a friend's voice, their own voice) and turn them into a 30-second soundtrack. It’s a simple assignment, but it teaches close listening, editing decisions, and how everyday sound can become material, especially for students who feel more confident with audio than drawing.
